Curtains vs Blinds
There are a few points to consider when choosing between the two, so let us break them down for you:
1. Functionality – Both are able to perform the basic requirements of window furnishing by providing privacy and blocking direct sunlight (and some rain, but that is mainly the job of your windows). Depending on the fabric you choose, you can control the amount of light to let in.
2. Location – As with property hunting, the locality of your window plays a part in choosing between the two. For example, if you are looking to put something up in the bathroom or kitchen, then curtains will not be the best choice as they will trap moisture and smell.
3. Light sensitivity – If you are very sensitive to light during sleep, and your bedroom windows happen to be almost wall to wall, then the best out of the two will be curtains (blackout fabric with double-pleated sew), as the material itself provides the most cover. E.g. The way roller blinds are designed, the tube is longer than the fabric. If your windows are almost wall to wall and there is no more room for the tube to extend in order to provide more cover at the sides, then light would be visible when the room is dark. 4. Cost – This is a question that is hard to answer as the materials chosen play a big, if not, the only part. However, let us suppose that given a specific window size, and choosing the lowest range of materials for each category, then curtains will be cheaper than blinds. There are many
other factors involved in this so this is a very subjective and inaccurate matter.
5. Maintenance – For both curtains and blinds, the occasional dusting is sufficient. If you are thinking of washing, then only curtains will be available for this option. Do note that blackout fabrics can only be dry-cleaned.
These are the main points you need to consider when choosing between the two options, but the list is not exhaustive. For one, if you are looking at variety in your window dressing, then curtains are able to provide this flexibility as you can just unhook them and put up a new one for a changed look.
